It can seem like that though, especially here in the conservative South, where there’s limited access to resources and gay-affirming community groups.

People who are part of the LGBTQ+ group face community-specific stressors on top of normal day-to-day stress. It’s scientifically called “minority stress,” and plenty of research has shown how detrimental it is to one’s mental health.

Words can be powerful, especially those that allow us to grow and heal.

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy is therapy with someone who also identifies with the LGBTQ+ community. These therapists know how you feel because they have most likely experienced the same things you have: discrimination, retaliation and loss of relationships.

Because therapy is so personal, it can be easier for those who are part of the community to talk with someone who identifies with them. It can allow people to be more open and honest about sexual details, relationship issues and the mental-health situations that come along with them.

Additionally, these therapists may be knowledgeable on local resources and the specifics of being LGBTQ+ in our local community.

All of the therapists at Wellspring Renewal Center are LGBTQ+ affirming or have had experience working with LGBTQ+ clients.

Even if your specific situation is not in relation to your sexual orientation or gender identity, it may be easier to build trust with a therapist who understands those situations.
